Fatal fire in Mason
BY QUAN TRUONG AND JENNIFER BAKER MASON – A woman was killed when she was trapped in a house fire in Mason Wednesday night. Pamela Childers, the pastor's wife at Mason First Church of God, identified the woman this morning as Aslee Engelman, 76. She said Engelman was one of the longest, most devoted members of the church. She raised her six children in the congregation. “It’s been quite a shock to us,” said Childers, who was at the fire scene until 2 a.m. with her husband, the Rev. James Childers. “She was a very active, vital member of this congregation. I believe she has been going to church here 40 or 45 years. She was one of our captains of our prayer team.” • More Mason news. Join the discussion. Childers said she and her husband went to Engeman’s house late Wednesday after hearing about the fire. She said Engelman lived with her youngest daughter, son-in-law and their two sons, 10 and 4. The daughter was home with her mother when the fire broke out and managed to safely escape the fire, she said. Childers does not know why Engelman wasn’t able to also get out. Her daughter’s family stayed overnight with friends, she added. Mason firefighters were called to a brick ranch home in the 100 block of Castanea Drive off Kings Mills Road around 9:30 p.m last night. When they arrived, the back of the house was fully involved, fire officials said. There were two women inside the home at the time and one made it out safely. The woman who escaped told firefighters her mother was still inside. Firefighters went inside and knocked out the fire there but as they were searching for the trapped woman, the roof collapsed and crews retreated, fire officials said. The rest of the fire was extinguished from the outside and the search resumed. The older woman was then found dead in a rear bedroom. The cause of the fire was not immediately available. There were no injuries to firefighters. Firefighters were still on the scene past midnight to fight hot spots. In addition to Mason, crews from Deerfield Township, Lebanon and Loveland responded. Family members and friends gathered on a nearby corner to console each other.

Pipe Bomb Video
It looks like 19-year-old Daniel Ferraro of West Chester was recording the explosion of a homemade pipe bomb when he was killed in his parents' backyard. While no one knows if or where he was going to post the footage, there are many examples of teens posting dangerous behavior on Facebook sites. Anybody out there worried about what your kids might be posting on Facebook? How far do you go to monitor your child's site, or do you choose to stay out of it? Ever restrict usage or take down a posting? I'd love to hear your input. I'm writing on this topic for the weekend. If you'd be willing to talk to a reporter on this topic, contact Janice Morse at jmorse@enquirer.com or 755-4152.
